In this review of Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #13, I take a closer look at an exceptional bourbon that leans heavily into a classic, oak-forward profile while showcasing the precision blending Bardstown has become known for. This expression doesn’t chase trends or novelty; instead, it focuses on delivering a refined, traditional experience built around aged oak, balanced sweetness, and depth of character. For those who appreciate a well-executed, mature bourbon profile, this one immediately stands out as a must purchase.

Nose
A very traditional nose opens with sweet, well-aged oak, cherry, and dark fruits. After the initial pass, there’s little to no ethanol, which allows the softer notes to shine. Subtle vanilla and brown sugar develop, layered over oak and a hint of sugar-coated leather. It’s classic, balanced, and inviting without being overly complex.
Palate
The palate delivers mild cherries and dark fruit up front, followed by drying tobacco, leather, and sweet brown sugar. This isn’t a profile chasing novelty; it’s about precision and execution. What you get is a textbook-aged bourbon profile done exceptionally well. As the sip evolves, the sweetness begins to gradually push the drier elements to the finish, setting the stage for the finish. For the pure whiskey enthusiast, Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #13 is absolutely a must-buy.
Finish
The finish turns wonderfully dry, with slightly tannic oak taking the lead. There’s a compelling interplay between that dry, tannic heat and a lingering touch of sweetness. The warmth settles squarely in the center of the chest and lingers in a satisfying, slow fade. Is that almond?
Overall
If you’re familiar with my preferred profile, this is right in my wheelhouse. This is bourbon at its core: aged oak, brown sugar, a touch of leather, and just enough sweetness to keep it balanced, though it leans more dry than sweet.
While there’s nothing groundbreaking about the flavor profile itself, what Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #13 does, it does exceptionally well. I’m still exploring exactly what Hungarian oak brings to the table, but if you’re an oak-forward drinker like I am, especially one who appreciates a classic, mature bourbon profile, this is an easy recommendation.
Simply put, this is an exceptionally well-executed blend.
