76 General Review of Bardstown Bourbon Discovery Series #5

Bardstown Bourbon Discovery Series 5 is somewhat smooth for a 104.7 proof whiskey. Unfortunately, there isn't much unique about it. Its notes are subtle, but one would expect more from such a complexly blended whiskey at Georgia's $129.99 price point.

Detailed Tasting Notes

Nose Review - Rating: 82

Bardstown Bourbon Discovery Series 5 starts with a somewhat rich feeling nose with a light fruitiness. Then, I get a subtle chocolate and cherry aroma. I always want something to grab me with the scent, and every time I’ve had this bourbon, all of the characteristics on the nose have been very mild. Nothing jumps out at you. Even the chocolate and cherry, which are well hidden, don’t last very long. After the glass sits for a while, the smell goes straight to a traditional bourbon nose.

Palate Review - Rating: 78

Somewhat disappointing on the palate with its thin mouthfeel. Black pepper and a medium amount of heat are what I discern initially. With all of the blending (31% Kentucky 13 your bourbon, 25% Tennessee 17 year bourbon, 25% Kentucky 7-year Bourbon, and 19% Kentucky 6 year bourbon), Discovery Series 5 ends up being a slightly above average tasting bourbon with few unique characteristics. The few good traits that are discernable are too mild.

Finish Review - Rating: 75

The finish is average, but like the rest of the experience, a little too uneventful.

Uniqueness Review - Rating: 75

No doubt the blending is uniques, but the result is not.

Value Review - Rating: 70

For me, this is the most disappointing whiskey of 2021, primarily because of its $129.99 price tag in Georgia and the lack of flavor.

Smell IS taste. I am just a guy who has been hit with the bourbon bug and who has come to the conclusion that life is too short to drink average tasting bourbons. Go Gators!
