80 Highly Rated Bourbon General Review of Barrell Bourbon New Year 2022

Barrell New Year 2022 Bourbon is my first taste of Barrell Craft Spirits New Year Bourbons. I wasn't sure what to expect other than anticipating that it would be good. I have tried at least 12 Barrell products to date (not including their Stellum brand) and only one bottle I didn't like. The others went from good to exceptional in the tasting experience. How would the New Year bourbon hold up?

The first pour of any Barrell product pales compared to the subsequent pours. Though this Barrell New Year 2022 Bourbon was good on the first pour, I still let it sit for a couple of weeks after the first tasting and then decided to write this review.

Detailed Tasting Notes

Nose Review - Rating: 78

On the nose, I am getting very light butterscotch and a mild light fruit. After the first sip, I started getting more pepper on the nose, then some of the more delicate notes that I initially identified came back. Caramel and mild oak too.

Palate Review - Rating: 80

This Barrell New Year Bourbon 2022 is different…sweet, creamy, and bold pepper…a lot of black pepper. I'm getting the same vivid notes I got on my first tasting. I am assuming this is a high rye bourbon because I am getting a lot of rye and tannic heat. I would not describe this as smooth. This was sweeter and a little more complex the first time around. Many Barrell products get sweeter after being open for a while, but I am getting as much or even more spicy heat as the first tasting. There is a very mild sweetness, corn, hovering below the earthy spice, but it isn't easy to discern because the peppery spice is so bold.

Finish Review - Rating: 84

The mild oak heat on the back of the throat is nice, and it is warm as it goes down. I would say the finish is medium length with additional tobacco notes. Nice.

Uniqueness Review - Rating: 80

As I mentioned earlier, this is different. However, I need more tastes of this to make a proper determination.

Value Review - Rating: 78

I paid $75.99 and this is more in line with its tasting experience.

Smell IS taste. I am just a guy who has been hit with the bourbon bug and who has come to the conclusion that life is too short to drink average tasting bourbons. Go Gators!
