80 Highly Rated Bourbon General Review of Blackened Rye The Lightning Double Cask Finished Rye Whiskey

Blackened "Rye The Lightning" Double Cask Finished Rye is a very good and unique expression. It is very unusual to find a 90-proof rye whiskey finished in Madeira wine and Caribbean rum casks, and this one does not disappoint.

Detailed Tasting Notes

Nose Review - Rating: 84

From the very beginning, a beautifully sweet, fruity, and minty rye aroma permeates the air after the bottle of Blackened Rye Double Cask Finished Whiskey is opened, then a smokey floral rye spice that is very mild. There is a gentle hint of caramel and vanilla layered below the beautiful rye spice aroma. The aroma toggles between rye spice and a burnt sweetness, clearly coming from the Madeira wine and Rum cask finishes.

Palate Review - Rating: 79

On the palate, it has a minty rye spice as soon as it hits the back of your throat. It’s intense on the back end. However, there is a beautiful sweet toasted fig sugar that you can also taste. Is that walnut? There’s a little bit of oiliness that I didn’t expect since, visually, it looks thin. It drinks exactly its proof for a rye. At 90 proof, I want something with a little bite, and this has it, but only on the back end and finish. Blackened Rye Double Cask Finished Whiskey is a good-tasting rye, but because it is 90 proof, you’re not going to get the intensity of flavors that you would with a barrel-strength rye.

Finish Review - Rating: 79

The finish is what you would expect. It has an intense rye kick, with the rum unveiling itself in full glory on the finish.

Uniqueness Review - Rating: 83

You will not find many double cask finished ryes, especially ones finished in Madeira wine and Caribbean rum casks. This is unique, especially for a lower-proof expression.

Value Review - Rating: 75

With a retail of $79.99, it is hard to give this something other than an average value rating considering this is a 90-proof rye. In fact, the rating is only this high because of the uniqueness of the rye.
