Here we have another highly aged expression from Dark Arts Whiskey House: Très Vieux Quintessence 15 Year Indiana Straight Rye. This is a 2026 Kentucky Bourbon Festival release, and Dark Arts has decided to do things in a big way this year, unveiling several impressive whiskeys with substantial age statements. A 15-year-old MGP rye is especially intriguing, as that much time in the barrel can dramatically reshape the familiar 95/5 rye profile.
Nose
The nose opens with those classic MGP rye aromas of dark brown sugar, mint, and vibrant rye spice. A cool spearmint note develops toward the back, accompanied by layers of lavender, honey, and spiced brown sugar. There is also a mild touch of lemon zest that adds some brightness. With more time in the glass, hints of dill, cinnamon, and seasoned oak begin to emerge. Despite the proof and age, the aroma remains relatively restrained, but it is pleasant, balanced, and unmistakably MGP.
Palate
I am a huge fan of MGP’s 95/5 rye, but the first sip of this expression hits a little differently. The rye spice arrives immediately, followed by glazed honey, dark brown sugar, oak, and a small ribbon of maple sweetness. There is no mistaking that you are drinking rye whiskey. This pour is dark, peppery, and intense, with bold cinnamon stick, black pepper, and concentrated rye spice dominating the experience.
The initial sweetness tries to keep those darker spices at bay, but it does not stand much of a chance. As the whiskey reaches the mid-palate, much of the honeyed sweetness recedes, allowing mature oak, dry baking spices, herbal rye, and a faint earthy quality to take control. Its 15 years in the barrel have transformed the normally bright and lively MGP profile into something deeper, more serious, and considerably drier.
Finish
The finish continues that intensity, delivering a sustained warmth that radiates through the chest. Seasoned oak and very mild brown sugar linger alongside tobacco leaf, worn leather, cinnamon, and black pepper. A trace of spearmint appears again near the end, providing a final reminder of the classic MGP rye character beneath all that mature oak and spice.
Overall
Overall, Dark Arts Très Vieux Quintessence is a dark, powerful, and mature interpretation of the familiar MGP 95/5 rye profile. It retains the mash bill’s signature mint, honey, citrus, and aggressive rye spice, but 15 years of aging have pushed the whiskey firmly toward seasoned oak, leather, tobacco, and dry baking spices. Those looking for a sweet, easygoing rye will not find it here, but drinkers who appreciate old, oak-driven whiskey with a bold and peppery personality should find plenty to explore here.
