Koopers Father's Office Cigar Blend Bourbon is a straight bourbon whiskey finished in Amburana and Japanese Mizunara Oak staves. Before diving into the review, I should note that I am not the biggest Amburana fan. In fact, there has only been one Amburana-finished whiskey that I truly enjoyed, that is, prior to this bottle. Having said that, this may very well be my favorite bourbon to date that incorporates an Amburana finish.
To provide additional perspective, it's important to note that this is a first-pour review. As many whiskey enthusiasts know, a bottle can evolve significantly after it has had time to open up and “breathe.” With that in mind, these tasting notes reflect my initial experience and may change as I spend more time with the whiskey, although I am not sure how this fantastic whiskey can get much better.
Nose
The nose opens with an intoxicating combination of fresh strawberries, rich buttercream, and vanilla frosting. Running alongside those dessert-like aromas is a beautiful honey graham cracker note that gives the whiskey an almost confectionary quality. The expected Amburana-driven baking spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, are certainly present, but they are remarkably well integrated into a creamy sweetness that keeps them from becoming overwhelming.
As Koopers Father's Office Cigar Blend Bourbon opens up, toasted coconut begins to emerge, almost certainly a contribution from the Mizunara oak. The result is a wonderfully layered aromatic experience that continually reveals new dimensions with each pass through the glass. One moment it's fresh vanilla cream cake, the next it's baking spick heavy cinnamon graham crackers, toasted coconut, and honey. I could easily spend an hour nosing this whiskey as it perpetually changes.
What's particularly impressive is that the aroma doesn't leap out of the glass and dominate the room. Instead, it invites you in, rewarding patience with extraordinary complexity and elegance. This is one of the most complex nosing experiences I've encountered in a finished bourbon.
Palate
The palate begins with a surge of baking spice and a noticeable burst of 114-proof heat. Initially, the Amburana influence takes center stage with bold cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. However, almost immediately, the profile transforms. As the spice begins to settle, a wave of sweet, toasted coconut emerges, wrapping itself around the baking spices and creating a fascinating interplay between sweet and savory elements.
The coconut note is rich and almost creamy, mingling with vanilla, honeyed graham cracker, and toasted oak. It carries through the mid-palate with remarkable persistence. This is where the marriage of Amburana and Mizunara truly shines. The Amburana provides an intense spice character, while the Mizunara contributes an exotic sweet, toasted coconut note that elevates the entire experience.
What fascinates me most is how Father's Office Cigar Blend Bourbon manages to be intensely spice-forward while simultaneously delivering such a vivid sweetness. Neither element overpowers the other. Instead, they work in harmony. The balance is exceptional.
Finish
The finish is long, warming, and wonderfully satisfying. The toasted coconut continues to linger alongside the semi-aggressive 114-proof heat, creating a sweet-and-spicy fusion that seems to go on forever. As the coconut gradually fades, strong notes of graham cracker, cinnamon, and toasted baking spices remain, leaving behind a rich, spicy, dessert-like finale.
Even minutes later, traces of honey, graham cracker, and seasoned spice continue to coat the palate.
I’m Blown Away
Koopers Father's Office Cigar Blend Bourbon is an outstanding finished bourbon and, for me, the most impressive Amburana-finished whiskey I've experienced. The combination of strawberry buttercream, honey graham cracker, toasted coconut, and exotic baking spices creates a profile that is both unique and remarkably cohesive. Complex without being chaotic, sweet without being cloying, and spicy without becoming abrasive, this bourbon showcases just how effective Amburana and Mizunara oak can be when handled with restraint and skill.
