In this Locke + Co. Aspen Aged Rye Review, I take a look at this 90-proof rye and its softer approach to the category. With notes of butterscotch, mild rye spice, lemongrass, and black pepper, it offers an easy-drinking profile, but in today's crowded field of bold, flavorful ryes, does it bring enough to stand out?
Nose
Butterscotch and soft, mild rye spice lead the way, with a touch of lemongrass underneath. Black pepper develops late, adding a little bite to an otherwise gentle nose.
Palate
The palate is equally mild. Soft rye spice and lemongrass mingle up front, with black pepper arriving later on the mid-palate. The flavors are pleasant but fairly restrained.
Finish
There is virtually no finish in terms of the sweeter or rye flavors, although the black pepper comes on surprisingly strong and lingers after everything else fades.
Overall
The rye whiskey category is extremely competitive these days, and unfortunately, Locke + Co. Aspen Aged Rye feels a little too mild to compete with some of the heavy hitters. There’s nothing particularly unpleasant here, but at 90 proof, it lacks the depth, intensity, and staying power I look for in a rye.
