The Remus Experimental Series serves as Master Distiller Ian Stirsman's creative playground, allowing him to explore unique mashbills and unconventional finishing techniques. Series No. 2 marks the first wheat whiskey ever released under the Remus label and showcases MGP's 95% wheat mashbill, a recipe rarely seen in the marketplace. The whiskey was distilled in 2017 and later finished in four different fortified-wine casks before being blended, creating a remarkably layered and distinctive profile.
This Remus Experimental Series No. 2 opened up spectacularly in the glass. The combination of Tawny Port, White Port, Oloroso Sherry, and Ruby Port casks adds depth and complexity without overshadowing the underlying wheat whiskey.
Nose
Rich, juicy, and inviting with aromas of strawberries and dried fruit, supported by a subtle undercurrent of wheat spice. As it opens, the fruit notes become increasingly expressive.
Palate
Chocolate, honey, blackberries, black pepper, and black cherries arrive in well-balanced layers. The wheat whiskey provides a soft, rounded foundation while the cask finishes contribute depth, richness, and dark fruit character.
Finish
Many of the palate notes carry through to the finish. It is moderate in length with gentle warmth and lingering fruit and chocolate notes.
Overall
Give this whiskey some time in the glass. Initially reserved, it transforms as it opens, revealing considerably more complexity and character. The combination of a mature wheat whiskey and four fortified wine cask finishes creates a uniquely wonderful pour that successfully balances sweetness, fruit, spice, and richness. Once it opens up, it becomes a fantastic whiskey.
