Rich and Creamy Spicy Rye Dominates the Palate

82 Highly Rated Bourbon General Review of Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered, Batch Batch 72. June 23, 2021

The nose on this Smoke Wagon UCUF is incredible. However, the overwhelming spicy rye dominates the palate and even the finish of this neck pour. I am having a hard time picking up other notes because of the rich and creamy heavy rye pepper. This is a little too spicy for my personal tastes, on this first pour.

Having said that, this is a very nice bottle of bourbon if you like that peppery spice (which most bourbon lovers do). The creamy mouthfeel and spice are a nice combination. It’s just not my thing. I can certainly see how some LOVE it. If you are a lover of heavy rye spice heat, then Smoke Wagon UCUF will be a winner for you. See my detailed review below.

Detailed Tasting Notes

Nose Review - Rating: 87

This has a very sweet and aromatic nose. The traditional smell of caramel is at the forefront. There’s a very slight ethanol smell that is overshadowed by a beautiful and mellow spicy rye. A very, very good aroma.

Palate Review - Rating: 81

The taste comes on very strong and immediate with peppery rye spice. It is so strong that it overshadows other notes, and I am trying hard to pick up other notes. The spice is complimented by a smooth and creamy, buttery rye heat—medium viscosity.

I am having a hard time picking out other notes because the rye’s black peppery heat is so dominant.

Finish Review - Rating: 83

The finish is a little more than medium length and is dominated by a wonderfully warm and lingering spicy heat.

Uniqueness Review - Rating: 82

The combination of a creamy and buttery taste with a very spice-heavy rye palate creates a unique experience.

Value Review - Rating: 79

It's hard to find these at retail, but Georgia's $69.99 retail price is a little steep. You are paying for the bottle too.

Smell IS taste. I am just a guy who has been hit with the bourbon bug and who has come to the conclusion that life is too short to drink average tasting bourbons. Go Gators!
