Detailed Tasting Notes

Nose Review - Rating: 83

The nosing experience of Southern Collective Prime Pickins 6-Year Single Barrel Straight Bourbon is pleasant. It has a bit of a creamy crème brûlée, rye spice, brown sugar, and creamy black pepper with a moderate aroma density. The ethanol is clearly present on this first pour, but fortunately, it weakens as you get deeper into the tasting experience. Sadly any other notes on the nose are relatively mild. When I returned to it for a later pour, the Coca-Cola caramel came through with cherry cream soda. The nosing experience becomes even more pleasing after the bottle has been open for a while.

Palate Review - Rating: 79

Man, Southern Collective Prime Pickins 6-Year Single Barrel Bourbon has a wonderfully intense quality. While the nose is pleasantly mild, the palate and finish are assertive! The notes include black pepper, clove, semi-sweet toasted dark brown sugar, and mint, complemented by a moderately creamy and oily mouthfeel. The peppery spice is clearly the dominant feature. However, there is enough toasted caramel sweetness to create a nice balance. Toasted oak is also present. The heat is always there but does not detract too much because of the dense flavors. Still, while Southern Collective Prime Pickins 6-Year Single Barrel Straight Bourbon is a good-tasting experience, it is a little too black pepper dominant for my preference.

Finish Review - Rating: 83

The radiant heat on the finish of Southern Collective Prime Pickins 6-Year Single Barrel Straight Bourbon never ends. This heat lasts longer than most of the whiskeys I have ever tried. Semi-sweet dark brown sugar, toasted oak, and char.

Uniqueness Review - Rating: 82

The flavor intensity adds to the uniqueness of this whiskey.

Value Review - Rating: 77

The $99.99 price point is a little high.

Smell IS taste. I am just a guy who has been hit with the bourbon bug and who has come to the conclusion that life is too short to drink average tasting bourbons. Go Gators!
