Wow, Stellum Black Bourbon Equinox Blend #1 is an excellent bourbon! At a time when a lot of young and average bourbons are being released, it is so good to experience a whiskey this rich, oily, and full of flavor.
Nose
Stellum Black Bourbon Equinox begins with a yummy and dense traditional bourbon aroma. Its heavy caramel is layered equally with a beautiful spicy rye scent. A bit of honey and toffee is layered underneath the preceding notes. After the first taste, I can sense a very mild green apple aroma…something you would typically associate with a rye whiskey. Next, a candy butterscotch sweetness. I swear I get a little nutmeg on the nose, too.
Palate
The first taste of Stellum Black Bourbon Equinox Blend was an adventure. The heat hit my tongue and the back of my throat instantly. Then, a fabulous buttery caramel spice, balanced with candied sweetness, took over. The mouthfeel is very oily and heavy. Next, a nutty black pepper palate with a little bit of saltiness.
Finish
The finish is long, lingering, thick, spicy, and hot.
