Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 118.4 is bourbon that is bold, densely rich, flavor-packed, and hot! It provides one of the more aggressive tasting experiences I've had this year.
Nose
The nose of Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 118.4 is a little more reserved than I anticipated, but it is a pleasant experience. It features mild toasted oak and ethanol. Some vanilla and caramel, traditional notes, are lurking quietly below the surface. Cookie dough baked with cinnamon powder and brown sugar mingle with traditional bourbon notes. Interestingly, I got pulled away from this beautiful-tasting bourbon for about 5 minutes, and when I returned, the aroma was full of caramel. Wow!
Palate
Please make no mistake about it; the palate of Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 118.4 is not reserved! It has all the notes that connect with my palate: heavy dark molasses, charred oak, a hint of coffee, and leather. The heat is ever present, but the rich flavor is so overpowering that the heat gets relegated to an afterthought. Again, charred sweet oak. Frankly, it is a little rough around the edges, and a little thin as well. It is missing the creaminess and viscosity that would make this an exceptional Bourbon.
Finish
All the flavors on the palate are present in the finish with a bit of added sweetness.
